Transportation ships as part of SAP R/2
SAP's first logistics solution is the transportation solution released as a component of R/2. Transportation is not yet a product; it is a function of the ERP.1

Five eras, four decades, one recurring pattern: transportation capability moves toward wherever the order-to-cash and procure-to-pay processes actually live. Every dated claim below carries a reference; where the evidence is secondary or could not be independently verified, the entry says so.
Transportation begins inside the ERP, as an extension of order fulfilment. The business question of this era is operational: how does a confirmed order physically leave the plant, and what did the movement cost.

Shipment documents, shipment cost calculation and settlement inside Logistics Execution. LE-TRA becomes the transportation backbone of the ECC install base and holds that position for roughly twenty-five years — the release is sourced1; the backbone characterisation and its span are editorial interpretation.
The consequence for today: for many brownfield programmes, the starting point remains an inventory of existing LE-TRA processes — which is why the sunset date in Era IV matters commercially, not just technically.
Optimisation and tracking arrive as satellites around the ERP. The limitation that defines the next era is already visible: planning intelligence lives in one system, execution and settlement in another.
Released as part of SAP APO, TP/VS brings optimiser-based transportation planning and vehicle scheduling, planning against sales orders and deliveries across a modelled network.1
Tracking of business events along the logistics chain — an early dedicated SAP visibility layer that anticipated capabilities now delivered through network-based track and trace.2
Transportation management becomes a product in its own right. The defining development of this era is not any single release date. It is the expansion from a planning tool into an end-to-end platform that serves two distinct businesses — shippers on one side, freight forwarders and logistics service providers on the other — covering transportation demand, freight units, freight orders and bookings, tendering, execution, charge management and settlement.1 It is the era in which Bernd Mosbrucker, who was involved in shaping the original SAP TM concept, writes his column The Architect's View from.
SAP TM 6.0 evolves out of TP/VS as a standalone SAP Business Suite application integrated with, but separate from, ERP.1 The exact general-availability year is not stated in any public primary source read for this history; community accounts place first adoption around 2008.3
SAP TM 8.0 and 8.1 deliver a redesigned and simplified architecture — SAP's own characterisation.1 Ramp-up of 8.0 begins in 20102; the 8.1 release documentation is dated 2012.4 Every subsequent TM release, including embedded TM in S/4HANA, builds on this foundation.27
The business relevance: decisions taken here — freight unit as the planning object, document flow from requirement to settlement — still shape how S/4HANA TM behaves today.
The 9.0 release notes are dominated by forwarding order management, air-freight processes, air cargo security, waybill stock, charge management and settlement — the clearest primary evidence of TM's deliberate expansion beyond the shipper into the logistics-service-provider business.5
TM returns to where it started — inside the ERP — but keeps the platform scope it built as a standalone product. The era also creates the commercial split that has shaped subsequent TM licensing decisions.
The 1809 release achieves functional parity with standalone SAP TM 9.6.14 Parity is not identity: individual capabilities of the standalone product, such as sales-order scheduling, remained outside embedded TM at this point.13 1809 also supports side-by-side deployment, receiving transportation requirements from other ERP or S/4HANA systems.16
From 1909, successive releases expand the functional scope beyond the standalone product.14 SAP identifies S/4HANA as the continuing innovation path; the standalone line remains at TM 9.6.
The embedded scope divides in two. Transportation Management — the capability introduced as Basic Shipping, subsequently renamed15 — is included in S/4HANA usage rights and succeeds central LE-TRA processes. Advanced Transportation Management carries the full planning, optimisation and shipper/LSP scope and requires additional licensing; it is carried as its own chapter with pricing-relevant scope items in the official feature scope descriptions.17
LE-TRA itself becomes compatibility-pack scope, with use rights running to the end of 2030.18 For customers remaining within SAP's transportation portfolio, the migration decision is therefore dated on both sides: standalone TM maintenance ends 2027, LE-TRA use rights end 2030.
TM stops being one product on one release train. It becomes a capability delivered on three cadences, connected outward to a carrier network and inward to the warehouse. Reading this era correctly means never conflating the branches.
Carrier collaboration expands beyond the transactional TM core. SAP Logistics Business Network, renamed SAP Business Network for Logistics, carries Freight Collaboration — the tender-to-invoice process with carriers — and Global Track and Trace for real-time visibility, integrating with both TM and ECC/S/4HANA.1928 TM evolves from an internal planning and execution system toward a node in a logistics network.
ASR connects Transportation Management, warehouse management and delivery management around the TM freight order as the leading transportation document, for embedded and decentralised EWM.20 Not a TM release, but an architectural decision: the freight order, not the delivery, leads the loading process — the convergence covered in TM–EWM integration.
After yearly releases through 2023, S/4HANA on-premise and Private Cloud Edition move to a two-year major-release cycle with feature package stacks roughly every six months, and mainstream maintenance of seven years per release.21
SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition does not inherit embedded Advanced TM wholesale. Its TM capability develops as a scope-item-driven branch on a twice-yearly cadence, with a more restricted and deliberately expanding scope — subcontracting (BMY) enabled with TM in 2602, sales scheduling agreements (3NR) and advanced intercompany sales (5D2) with TM and WM in 2608.222324 Its release numbers (2308 … 2608) must not be conflated with S/4HANA 2025.
Released October 2025 under the two-year cycle, with mainstream maintenance to December 2030.21 The same month, TM verticalises: SAP Transportation Management, network and operations for container shipping liners for SAP S/4HANA ships as an add-on on embedded TM, covering liner schedules, vessel capacity and allocations.25
The live SAP road map for transportation management (read 9 September 2026) centres on cloud TM/WM process completion — stock transfers, supplier returns, subcontracting — dangerous-goods integration, and two named AI items: a Logistics Assistant under Freight Document Collaboration (Q4 2026) and a Tendering Insights Agent (Q1 2027). Second, the renaming of Basic Shipping to Transportation Management is cited to an SAP-authored blog that could not be opened directly at compilation time. Third, assessments of individual releases' market reception are deliberately omitted; a release history should record what shipped, not grade it.
